PROJECT: CAUSEWAY ARMY

Ming & Ping is an electronic pop band consisting of Hong Kong-born identical twins, Ming and Ping and myself as their producer. Causeway Army is Ming & Ping's third full length EP and the first time we had fully self-released an album without our previous record label, so it was a great opportunity to take control of the creative process and to put a Ming & Ping spin on the indie album release process.

I worked very closely with the twins to fully coordinate all of Causeway Army's visuals and marketing with the music on the albums. Here was a chance to exercise my two strongest strengths: translating intangible concepts to visual art, and creating a variety of physical manifestations of that concept.

THE CAUSEWAY ARMY IDENTITY

"FLESH UNDER THE MACHINE"

Keeping elements from Ming & Ping’s existing “CMYK Pop” theme, I based Causeway Army's image on the lyrics and musical styling on the recording - reflections on cultural identity and human relationships set in an urbanized and mechanized world.

The concept of the album and the visuals came to be known as “the flesh under the machine” and all visual elements played off this theme.

PRODUCTS & PACKAGING

To focus on the theme of man/machine, I decided on a more photography-based approach to designing Causeway Army's packaging.

A choice of unique materials also gave character to the Causeway Army press kits without over-extending the budget.

PHOTOS & VIDEO

With limited time and budget leftover, I produced and directed three promotional photo sets using the Causeway Army theme. The imagery for Causeway Army is noticeably darker than previous promotional materials.

I also produced and designed the first music video from Causeway Army entitled "Legends of Nothing," which premiered at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival in March 2008. Two other music videos for the album are currently in production.
