PROJECT: MELODIE GORE

Melodie Gore is a visual artist whose work deals with fictional characters and eroticism in pop culture. Melodie reinvents herself as a variety of characters, using her training in costume and makeup, and collaborates with photographers to create captivating images. Due to a surge in interest in her work, the artist needed a new visual identity in order to better interact with press inquiries and potential commissions.

After researching the field and brainstorming with Melodie, I was able to design a visual identity as well as a long-term communications strategy based on the concepts explored in the artist’s work - comics and anime, mass media, and eroticism in popular culture.

THE MELODIE GORE IDENTITY

"Character Fiction"

Because Melodie's portfolio already had such strong imagery, the solution for her identity system was to show the artist in her basic human state, surrounded by her many eye-popping creations. To show this concept, I directed a new photo series that would be used in all of Melodie's identity graphics.

I also gave Melodie somewhat of a mascot; a baby octopus - being a fetish object in Japanese art since Hokusai, I decided to also use it as a symbol of Melodie's multifaceted skills as an artist and her ambitions to adapt her appearance to each story. This then informed the purple color scheme and the type was chosen to present a more serious and professional artist while letting the work speak for itself.

COLLATERAL

Since most of Melodie Gore's communications are done over the web, the artist did not need much in terms of collateral, as the website would be the center of her communications. However, part of the strategy we developed was a way to keep in touch with her network, so along with online graphics, we decided on a new business card and a 'thank you' postcard.

Business cards used a Spot UV printing process make the artist stand out from the comic-book background.

STYLEGUIDE

I created a brief styleguide and templates to be used to develop future communications, since there's no telling where Melodie Gore's ambitions would take her career. :)
